Born and raised in the dry hills of central New Mexico, Deborah McCarroll has developed her skills as a professional artist while exhibiting throughout the United States. College trained in commercial art, McCarroll expanded her expertise to include block printing, watercolor, pastel and her primary focus, acrylic painting. She currently lives
and works in her Seattle, Washington studio where the water, the lush environment and laid-back atmosphere are major influences. Her work is textural, rich in color and metaphor. Her thematic paintings seem to expand and hum with an emotional depth–vibrant and full of movement. “As human beings, we must face the emot ional contrasts of simply living day-to-day in this world. The hard-edge, dry substance of mundane, daily human interaction versus the drenching, personal experiences of the emotional self – love, pain of loss, issues of self image. The soft things that we protect versus the tougher shell in which we face the world. These are the themes I work to explore. For me, paint is an excellent medium for that exploration. I tend to think of each painting as a story or a film. There’s always the expectation of something going to happen in every painting. Even in the abstracts there is movement and transition. Color floats into color. It breathes. I look at my paintings and things are happening. Movement, light. A life is being lived inside each one."
